Prospective Academic Coaches
MindFit coaches represent the best of tutor training and performance. Our coaches are trained to work with students with learning disabilities, ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and other educational disabilities. Our one-on-one, peer-to-peer coaching is unique because our coaches and students build semester-long relationships that are not otherwise possible in a drop-in tutoring setting. Our coaching model is based on consistency and structure, which has proven to benefit our target population. MindFit coaches are essential to the Academic Enhancement program, creating a safe and encouraging culture that allows our students to not only succeed in the classroom but thrive in college and beyond.
Why do we call ourselves coaches instead of tutors?
We call ourselves coaches because we prioritize skill building, long-term success, and the process of learning. Tutors tend to focus on building concrete skills and helping students with immediate content needs. However, similar to a sports coach, an academic coach works on strategies for sustained academic success. Coaches help students develop a more organized approach to learning and schoolwork while strengthening their executive functioning skills, such as time management, task prioritization, and attention and focus.
Growth Mindset and Professional Development
At MindFit, we embrace a growth mindset—the belief that abilities and intelligence can be developed through effort, practice, and learning. This philosophy guides both our student employee development, as well as our student support model. Our coaches continuously refine their skills through training, feedback, and experience, just as we encourage students to persist through challenges and to develop strategies for academic success.
Our academic coaches have opportunities for continued training throughout the semester to improve their student support toolboxes. Each semester, our coaches undergo CRLA adherent training from MindFit staff. Our coaches also continually receive feedback on how to better themselves as coaches and grow as educational professionals. We believe that both students and academic coaches benefit from this growth mindset philosophy.
