Become a MindFit Academic Coach

MindFit offers placement and internship opportunities for students to gain hands-on experience as academic coaches. 

In this role, coaches work directly with their peers to foster academic growth and executive function support. They will help students develop effective learning strategies, improve time management and organization, and build academic confidence through personalized coaching sessions. They will also have the opportunity to engage with diverse learning styles, provide guidance on goal setting, and support students in overcoming their academic challenges. Coaches also receive ongoing training and feedback, including pre-semester College Reading and Learning Association adherent training, and periodic check-ins to refine their client management and student support skills. 

MindFit collaborates with a variety of departments and majors on campus. This experience not only fulfills placement hour requirements but also enhances professional development by strengthening communication skills, providing mentorship, and enhancing problem-solving skills. By participating in a MindFit placement, students will contribute to a service-oriented roll, while gaining practical experience that can benefit their future careers.

Responsibilities:

  • Meet in person with assigned students to facilitate academic coaching
  • Schedule appointments Monday-Friday with students on a fixed schedule that’s followed through the end of the term. 
    • Sessions vary in length from 1hr-2hrs depending on the student and their support needs  
  • Coach students on a variety of executive function skills (time-management, organization, task initiation, task prioritization, etc.), study/content retention skills, and note-taking skills  
  • Practice collaborative goal setting, tracking of related progress, and adjusting support plans based on student performance 
  • Complete accurate, timely reports of every session using Navigate to track student progress  
  • Meet with MindFit staff throughout the semester during scheduled meeting campaigns to discuss student progress and coaching development

Requirements: 

  • Must have a minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Have prior approval from department that placement will work for major/departmental credit  
  • Attend pre-semester Academic Coaching training
    • Normally scheduled for the Thursday and Friday the week before classes start each semester
